ewfashionblogger – Anna Dello Russo’s 10 Christmas Party Tips

Anna Dello Russo’s 10 Christmas Party Tips

Last Monday I showed you what to wear for a high-budget, to the many Christmas parties to come. However today, I’m going to share with you Anna Dello Russo’s 10 party tips, to make sure you make a great entrance. 10 tips from the fantastic Italian, each with a suggestion from me, here it is:

1. Red & Green

Anna Dello Russo: “Don’t wear red and green together – you will look like a christmas tree.”
ewfashionblogger: I suggest that if you want to wear either red or green, just stick to the one colour. If you have to wear it with another colour, pair it with a metallic gold or silver, or for the red, and black sequined number.

Topshop – Lace 3/4 Sleeve Top (£28) – Topshop.com.
Haute Hippie – Sequined Silk-Chiffon Mini Skirt (£355) – Net-a-porter.com.
Rag & Bone – Danby Cable-Knit Wool Sweater (£275) – Net-a-porter.com.
Zara – Metallic Skirt (£22.99) – Zara.com.

2. Forget The Coat

Anna Dello Russo: “Forget the coat – you should make a big impact just with your dress.”
ewfashionblogger: I agree, the dress, or whatever you are wearing instead, is meant to make a big impact. However, if you do think you are going to get a little cold (you probably won’t because you will be dancing), make your coat or cardigan unobtrusive.

3. Go Gold

Anna Dello Russo: “Choose gold to emphasise the idea that you are a Christmas gift in need of unwrapping.”
ewfashionblogger: Gold is a great Christmas party colour, but so are other metallics. Don’t go metallic all over; instead give it a break with a block colour, maybe on the shoes, bag or nails.

Roland Mouret – Wallis Metallic Embossed Silk-Blend Gown (£2,100) – Net-a-porter.com.
Topshop – Nails in Lacquered (£5) – Topshop.com.
Topshop – Rouched Sequin Sash Dress by Rare Opulence (£165) – Topshop.com.
nails inc – Couture in Symons Street (£20) – nailsinc.com
(nails inc couture nail polish is customizable, you can choose the lid, colour, message on the bottom of the pot, and stickers on the box).

4. Get A Manicure

Anna Dello Russo: “Go to the hairdresser and have a facial, manicure and pedicure. Don’t be afraid to be overdone.”
ewfashionblogger: Going to the hairdressers can make you feel more relaxed – perfect just before a party. Don’t have your hair cut though, because what if you are not happy with it? Have your nails done in a standout, contrasting colour. Plan your nails and makeup around what you are wearing –  not the other way about.

5. Hat vs. Makeup

Anna Dello Russo: “Choose between a hat and make-up. If you wear a hat, keep a fresh face.”
ewfashionblogger: This is very wise, however for me personally, I would wear make-up rather than a hat. Anna Dello Russo certainly knows how to make an entrance in a hat (see previous blogs), although I suggest for you to keep the hat a little more simple rather than going all out and wearing a life-size red swan on your head!

6. Jewellery

Anna Dello Russo: “Wear lots of jewellery. The sound of it clanking will banish bad thoughts and bad ghosts.”
ewfashionblogger: Jewellery is a great way to make a statement. Chunky bangles and glittery necklaces are the perfect way to accessorize any outfit.

Kenneth Jay Lane – Studded 22-Karat Gold-Plated Cuff (£200) – Net-a-porter.com.
Topshop – Graphic Section Drop Earrings (£10) – Topshop.com.

(Bottom) Erickson Beamon – Confetti Gunmetal-Plated Swarovski Crystal Cuff (£675) – Net-a-porter.com.
Topshop – Triangle Metal Collar Necklace (£25) – Topshop.com.

7. Focus On The Shoes

Anna Dello Russo: “Focus on the shoes. Generally, at a party, you spend a lot of time seated on the sofa, where people will see them.”
ewfashionblogger: You should certainly choose one aspect of the outfit you want people to focus on. Too much going on, and you will look like you have come out of a fancy dress shop. Too little going on, and people will simply not notice you. The balance is key. Play up one aspect, and keep the rest simple, contrasting or (ideally) both.

8. Choose Standout Shoes

Anna Dello Russo: “Shoes have to carry all the magical atmosphere of Christmas: choose sparkling, shiny, eccentric, metallic, decorative, precious, brocade, extravagant, colourful, magnificent, enchanting shoes.”
ewfashionblogger: Need I say any more!?

Topshop – LOVE Colour Block Suede Sandal (£65) – Topshop.com.
Zara – Snake Skin Court Shoe (£69.99) – Zara.com.

Jimmy Choo – Agnes Patent-Leather Pumps (£335) – Net-a-porter.com.
Giuseppe Zanotti – Crystal-Embellished Satin Ankle Boots (£1,095) – Net-a-porter.com.

9. The Bag Doesn’t Matter…

Anna Dello Russo: “Don’t worry about your bag. You will immediately forget it on a chair, and nobody will notice it.”
ewfashionblogger: If this is true, then don’t spend too much on the bag! If you are one of those people who never let go of their clutch, then make it special, but neutral so it doesn’t interfere with your outfit.

10. Manners!

Anna Dello Russo: “Don’t throw yourself on the drinks and food. It’s not polite.”
ewfashionblogger: Metaphorically and physically speaking! Always wait for somebody else to make the first move.

Anna Dello Russo’s comments and tips were first published in the Sunday Times Style magazine Christmas 2010.
